Provider Spotlight: Family Roots Therapy

Our spotlight provider this month is Kaleigh Boysen-Quinata, LMFT of Family Roots Therapy. This NE Portland practice serves families, individuals, couples, and children by providing a safe container for them to share and heal.

Kaleigh began her career as a teacher, and that passion for education is at the core of her therapy practice. She absolutely loved working with kids and watching them grow and learn. But the classroom demands pulled her in too many directions to meet the higher emotional needs that many children experience.

Becoming a parent further encouraged Kaleigh to pursue ways to help families navigate the parent/child relationship. After looking into counseling as a career shift, Kaleigh eventually completed a Master’s degree in Marriage and Family Therapy.

A Mission to Provide a Sustainable Practice

Family Roots Therapy provides a sustainable practice for its staff and clients.

Working in a community mental health setting gave Kaleigh great opportunities to serve. But it was a high-stress situation without much support for the staff. There was a high burnout and turnover rate in that job.

One day, Kaleigh told a coworker that she dreamed of starting a practice that would support the clients and the providers. And then she did!

Kaleigh opened her own practice in 2017 and two years later began bringing on other therapists. Currently, Family Roots has six therapists on staff, along with two student interns.

In this setting, the providers have manageable caseloads that allow them to work with joy and confidence without the risk of burnout. What does that mean for clients? It means that they can develop trusting relationships with their therapists over time without experiencing constant turnover.

When patients constantly need to adjust to new providers, it is difficult for them to feel safe or supported. Frequently, when there is high turnover, patients stop seeking help. At Family Roots Therapy, Kaleigh is passionate about creating a sustainable practice that serves her staff and their clients.

Inclusive, Affordable Therapy

Family Roots Therapy offers counseling for children, teens, and families.

Another issue that Kaleigh was eager to address when setting up her private practice was the lack of spaces prepared for young children. So many counseling offices do not provide a safe and comfortable area for their youngest clients.

In one situation Kaleigh faced, children were having their therapy sessions right next to the adult parole office! She knew things could and should be better.

She made it a priority at Family Roots to have a welcoming space to serve children and their families. The staff recognizes and celebrates the unique needs of young children in counseling and does not treat them as a “byproduct” or “afterthought.” They are the focus.

Inclusivity at Family Roots Therapy extends to their pricing as well. By having two highly supervised student interns on-site, Kaleigh is able to offer some sessions at a lower rate than would typically be available. Her partnerships with Portland State University and Lewis and Clark College allow for this beneficial arrangement.

In addition, Family Roots currently accepts Cigna, Regence BCBS, Moda, Pacific Source, and some forms of OHP.
